It's pretty hard to write about this movie in 2019 without feeling the crushing weight of Harry Potter as cultural phenomena, or the franchise's increasingly-desperate and bizarre 'wizards poop their pants' social media presence. But here goes:
This was the best of the Potter movies. Not as stylish as Azkaban, but also no time travel. It took a lot of risks that payed off, and has some really great, memorable moments you'd never except from the seventh movie in a franchise. On the other hand, they might have been best to spread out the risk-taking a bit, because the the next one is so disappointingly bland and by-the-numbers that it ruins this one by association.
Still an impressively good adaptation of an impossible-to-adapt book. It still feels so fresh, and the special effects still work so well, that it's hard to think that this is sixteen years old.
